Several models for various dutys.

W 463

In 1989 Mercedes-Benz introduced the new W463-models. They where the result of the fact, that the G had become more and more popular, and their owners where asking for much more Mercedes-typical comfort. And so the W463 had became the perfect combination of excellent offroad-behavior and the Mercedes-like comfort.
The important innovations were a completely new designed interior, permanent four-wheel-drive, ABS, three difflocks as standard fittings, a much more comfortable chassis and an external facelift, mainly at the front.

200 GE

Like the 200 GE of the W460-models this 200 GE is only offered on the Italian market, too. This is because of the local tax-laws. Like all other models the 200 GE is delivered with a 5-speed-manual and is available in both the long and short G. The engine with the denotation M102.965 have 116 hp or 113 hp with a catalytic converter.

Technical Data - sorry, not available, jet.

230 GE

The 230 GE has the smallest engine of the new W463-models. Like the other G's, it could be ordered in the short 3-door, the long 5-door and the convertible which also had the short wheelbase of 2400 mm and was also available with a 4-speed-automatic-transmission.

Technical Data

300 GE

The 300 GE had been the flagship of the first W463-generation. With its 170 hp 6-cylinder-engine, it was the most powerful serial-G that had been build until that time. The engine had been taken from the W124-limousine where it have had 180 hp.

Technical Data

500 GE

Only 500 units of the 500 GE were built (300 for Germany). It should be the only official V8-G until 1999. The 5.0 liter V8 which had been taken from the 1991 500 SE (W126) was only available in the long wheelbase. One of the most notable features was, that the V8 only had two difflocks as opposed to the three available in all other W463 Gs. The standard fittings include seatheatings at the frontseats, air conditioning, 4 power windows, sliding roof, cruise control, leather equipment, ABS and automatic transmission. It also had modified brakes and was only available in one color: amethyst blue.

Technical Data

250 GD

The 250 GD possessed the smallest diesel engine offered. It was the same engine which had been used in the W460. It was also the only W463-model which was not available with an automatic transmission. Like most of the other engines, the 5-cylinder had been taken from the W124-limousine.

Technical Data

300 GD

From the beginning the 3.0 liter diesel-engine had became the favorite choice of the G-buyers. Even with its high price, the 300 GD was very popular with commercial users. This was due to its excellent quality and the strong and long-lived engine.

Technical Data

350 GD Turbodiesel

Bigger, faster, stronger...! With the 350 GD the first turbo charged engine took place in a serial-G. And it was also the first G which was only available with an automatic transmission. Due to the high output of the new diesels, Mercedes Benz deemed it necessary to abandon the manual transmission in favor of a more capable automatic.

Technical Data

G 320

In 1994 the G 320 was introduced and phased out the G 300. At the time, it was the strongest gas powered G. The inline 6-cylinder was replaced in 1998 by the new V6-engine which have less weight, is stronger and also needs less gas.

G 500

G 500 lwbFrom the beginning the G 500 is the favorite choice with new G buyers, with over 46% opting for the big V8. In 1999 the G 500 was also available a Jubilee Model 'Classic'. Unlike former jubilee models like the 500 GE or the 230 GE this edition was not limited by number and was available in all three body versions. While the common models of the G 500 where already well equipped with accessories, the 'Classic' leaves nothing to be desired.

Technical Data

G 300 Turbodiesel

The G 300 Turbodiesel with the new 5-speed-automatic was the first diesel engine which could compair in power with the gas-engines (if we ignore the G 500). Never the less of its less displacement the engine got a 6% bigger torque (3300 NM at 1600 - 3600 rpm) and 18% more power (177 hp at 4400 rpm) and that with an about 9% less average fuel consumption. This came of the new electronic engine and transmission-management.

Technical Data

G 400 CDI

On September 28th Daimler Chrysler presented the new G400  CDI official to the public at the international. It have an eight-cylinder diesel engine features common rail direct injection, water-cooled intercooler and twin turbochargers. This V8 with 184 kW/250 hp and torque of 560 Newton meters upwards of 1700 rpm gives the G a top speed of 180 km/h, with NEDC combined fuel consumption of 12.8 litres/100 km.
Like the the G500 the Diesel-V8 is running on 18" alloys, too. Further comfort is provided by the new-design front seats, which are power-adjustable in fore-and-aft direction and for height, and by the power-adjustable steering column. The standard memory function stores individually selected seat and steering wheel positions. When the electronic ignition key is removed, the steering wheel is automatically raised for a more convenient exit. The steering wheel remains in this position until the driver gets back into the car.
The innovative COMAND operating/display system, which incorporates the controls for the radio, CD player, navigation system, TV receiver and other functions in a single unit, will become available for the G-class starting in December 2000. On the V8 models G400 CDI and G500, this system is a standard specification.
