W 461

1992 the W461 line of products replaced the W460. The new line of products which remained almost technically unchanged, stood out for itself by a clear reduction in the accessory options. As a result, one searched particularly in vain for comfort elements like power windows, air-conditioning, but also e.g. for an automatic transmission in the lists of extra equipment for the new 'commercial'-line. In addition, engine choice was limited with just one gasoline and diesel engines. The gasoline engine disappeared for lack of demand completely within time from the program. For those who wanted more selection, they had to change to the 'comfort' line of products, the W463. The W461 was enhanced with comfort elements in 1997 when the diesel engine was fitted with a turbo charger. Both electric windows and air-conditioning were offered again, but also safety accessories like antilocking brakes and a driver-airbag were available. Standard equipment levels became more extensive again: So the 290GD turbodiesel were delivered with a standard automatic-transmission, rev counters, more powerful generator and more. The model range is reduced from six onto four models: the station-wagon with 2400 and 2850mm wheelbase, the van with 2850mm wheelbase and the chassis with cab with a wheelbase of 3400mm are kept. The Pickup with 2850mm and the chassis with 3120mm wheelbase, were dropped subsequently. For the military, the convertible with hinged windscreen on long and short wheelbase is still offered.

230 GE

In opposite to the diesel-engine, the motor of the 230 GE had been the same still know of the W460 since the early eighties. Because of increasing gasoline-prices, the gas-engine had never been the favorite choice of the G-buyers - only 2% decided for a 230 GE. This was the reason why the gasoline variant had been taken of the W461 model-range in 1997.

290 GD

290 GD lwbThe engine of the new 290 GD originated from the Mercedes-Benz van 'sprinter' where however it was equipped with a turbo charger. One reason probably why the turbo charger had been refused by Graz for the G could be that the engine so had been controlled purely mechanically, what simplified of course it maintenance and repair, e.g. what the globetrotters under the g-drivers up will have pleased, because which jungle forge already has an electronic diagnostic-computer?

290 GD Turbodiesel

290 GD Turbodiesel1997 at last Graz supplied the G now nevertheless a turbo charger, after already some Mercedes dealers offered in the years before 290 GDs with a free turbo charger (e.g. from THS). However also the accessory range had been increased in order to make the G more attractively for noncommercial users. In addition, an 5-speed automatic gear was now delivered on the 290 GD. The same, which was already confessed from the G 300 and the G 320.
