So this is how it all started, but in the first years all that glittered was not gold...

1990
Mercedes-Benz starts with a new line of products in the 90's: the W463. In this series, comfort and excellent offroad qualities unite themselves. 3 body variants and 4 engines are offered. Simultaneously with the introduction of the 'comfort' line, the production of the 280 GE and the 300 GD is stopped. Through this measure, it clarifies into which direction the two lines of products are to go in future: The W460-, and later the W461 line of products should operate the commercial market and for the others, the far more expensive W463 line.

1991
Already in September 1991 Mercedes-Benz presented the 350 GD turbodiesel with standard automatic transmission to the public. This was the engine that was also available in the Mercedes S-class, which achieved 136 hp in the G and replaced the 3.0 liter diesel engine.

1992
In April of this year, the new line of W461 products is introduced. In the model range of the W461, the convertible is missing unlike the W460. Instead of the convertible, the pickup has its debut with a wheelbase of 2850 mm. There are also changes in the motorization: the only diesel engine is now a 2.9 liter 5-cylinder motor with 95 hp from the MB transporter 'Sprinter'. Beside the 230 GE is still available as for gasoline engines. The production of the W460 line of products is stopped only one month later. In the same month, the 350 GD turbodiesel is available for delivery for the first time. The production of the 250 GD from the W463 line of products is stopped on account of weak demand.

 1993
Mercedes-Benz presents the 500 GE. This G is nonetheless a special model, which is limited to 500 specimens. The standard equipment leaves no wishes open, only the front differential lock was missing.

1994
The model range of the W461 line of products is extended by a G chassis with cab and a wheelbase of 3400 mm. But there are also some changes on the W463 models: Within the framework of the general model name change, the 350GD turbodiesel became the G 350 turbodiesel and the 300 GE changes into G 300. The W461 models were spared up to now by the modification of the nomenclature. As from March, all W463 models are equipped as standard with a driver-airbag. In summer of 1994, the G 320 is introduced parallel to the G 300, which it will eventually replace. Together with the G 300, the G 230 is also removed from the range, so that only the two top motorization remains.

1995
In September of this year, the W463 range standard features are enhanced even further. These standard enhancements included ventilated disc brakes, an infrared remote control for the central locking system and an electronic immobilizer.
|
1996
In 1996, there are new innovations in both the W463 and W461 G-lines. After 17 years, the convertible receives an electro-pneumatic folding-hood. Furthermore, the G 300 Tubodiesel debuts to the public at the IOR in Munich. This now has a standard 5-speed automatic transmission. In addition, all W463 models are now equipped as standard with a passenger-side airbag, headlight cleaning jets and cruise control.
In the commercial-line of products, the W461, Puch now also offer a double cabin for the long wheelbase chassis with cab.

1997
This year Mercedes-Benz extended the optional equipment list of the W461. The W461 is now available with a driver-airbag, power windows and cruise control. Due to poor sales (only 2% of the W461 are ordered with the gasoline engine), the 230 GE is taken off the model range. At the W463-models, the 3.2 liters inline-engine is changed to the V6 design.

1998
On the 10th IOR (International offroad- and fourwheeler fair) in Munich, the first standard-G with a V8 is presented after 19 long years; the G 500. With its power of almost 300 hp the G breaks through the 200 km/h barrier for the first time.
The performance of the 290 GD is enhanced, much to the delight of consumers. The turbo diesel (from the MB van 'Sprinter') now produces 120 hp, and like the W463, the 290 GD turbodiesel is only delivered with an automatic transmission. Air-conditioning is now available on the optional equipment of the 290 GD.

 1999
For the 20th anniversary the G, the jubilee-model G 500 'Classic' is presented in March at Graz/Austria. Delivery begins after the IAA of '99. In summer 1999, all W463 models receive the new multifunction steering wheel which is present in the passenger car program.
